Gents

Software: Rhino, Adobe Illustrator
Fabrication: acrylic and plywood lasercutting, woodwork, cement and plastic casting, welding, 3D printing

Gents is a lesson.

It is an exploration of the ease of complicity in gentrification. Gents is a series of three sculptures: a wooden, hand-constructed house that can be "assembled" and "disassembled;" a concrete and rebar apartment building in a state of disrepair; and a 3D printed neighborhood that can be stacked, nested, and otherwise rearranged. The house and neighborhood were initially nestled into beds of cast plastic.

Viewers were invited to touch, assemble, populate with dollhouse furniture (provided by Seanmi), and otherwise customize and "play" with the structures. But in creating their own aesthetically pleasing buildings, viewers unknowingly uprooted a preexisting space, perhaps displacing its previous “inhabitants.”
